星条旗を謳った国歌

国歌斉唱時に愛国心を示すアーカンソー州地元住民、アーカンソー州リトルロック空軍基地、314部隊空輸航空団、2004年ハートランドの英雄たちによる航空ショーにて

アメリカにいらっしゃると、星条旗を至る所で目にされることと思います。公共機関の建物だけでなく、事務所ビルや商業施設、家の軒先に国旗を掲揚する家庭もあります。超特大サイズのものがはためき目を引く車の販売店もあります。

アメリカの国旗は、独立戦争最中の1777年6月14日、第2回大陸会議内で合衆国旗のデザインを決議したことに基づき、今ではこの日が国旗記念日となりました。https://www.military.com/flag-day

その後再びイギリスとの戦争時、1814年9月の戦下で旗を詠んだ詩が人々に親しまれ、のちに国歌として制定されていきました。

そんな背景を、米国国立公文書館と連邦議会図書館の資料から辿ってみたいと思います。

独立戦争後19世紀初頭のアメリカは、フランスからのルイジアナ買収やルイス・クラーク探検隊の西部への道のり開拓など、国として領土拡大を模索しているような時期です。

英国は、大西洋の覇権を握り、米仏の貿易を妨害し、アメリカ船を拿捕し船員を拉致して英軍に引き込んだり、一方アメリカ大陸では影響力保持のため、カナダを掌握したいアメリカに対抗し、カナダ先住民へ戦力支援し、と両国の関係は友好的とは言えない関係にありました。

結果1812年には米英戦争となり、北部カナダとの争いから始まり、ナポレオンとの戦争も終結したイギリスは戦力を東海岸に向け、主要な港が狙われ、首都ワシントンDCも戦場となりました。首都も陥落し、戦いはボルチモア港へ移ります。1814年9月のことです。

マクヘンリー要塞（Fort　McHenry)は、この地図の左上、ボルチモア（BALTIMORE）市街の手前、パタプスコ川（PATAPSCO　RIVER）の河口にあります。

ワシントンDCの弁護士、フランシス・スコット・キー(Francis Scott Key)氏は、第４代ジェームス・マディソン大統領の任で、英軍との捕虜交渉にあたります。

要塞沖の英軍船内で交渉は行われ円満に進みながらも、そのまま戦火に巻き込まれてしまいます。

アメリカ軍は要塞で防衛、イギリス軍は海上から攻撃、1814年9月13日からはじまり、翌14日まで25時間にも及んだそうです。

戦火の中、明け方の日のなかで星条旗がみられた喜びを詩によみ綴り、後日受け取った兄の働きでそのまま地元新聞に掲載されます。

原典タイトルは「マクヘンリー要塞の防衛、The Defence of Fort McHenry」とつけられました。こちらのリンクは、書かれた当時のままの詩を載せています。

メロディーの方は、1760年代にイギリスの社交クラブの曲として作られていたもので、英米で流行り、変え歌にしたりしながら親しまれていたものです。兄も、この曲に合わせて歌うのを思い描いていたようです。

私的な集まり等で歌い継がれながら、１９世器後半、海軍の旗掲揚時に演奏されたことが公の場での始まりだそうです。

野球の試合にも受け継がれ、第一次世界大戦中1918年のワールドシリーズの場に由来するそうです。ベイ・ブルースが所属したボストン・レッドソックスとシカゴ・カブスの試合でした。

民衆の議会への働きかけもあり、1931年ウィルソン大統領のもとで国歌として制定されました。
