戦争と図書2

前回の第1次世界大戦中の戦争と図書に関する記事に引き続き、今回は、第2次世界大戦及びその後の時代に焦点を当ててみたいと思います。

 

下記のポスターは、第2次世界大戦中のポスターの一つで、ドイツ・ナチスによる、大量の本の焚書(ふんしょ)―当時のナチズムの思想に合わないとされた書物が焼き払われたことを題材にして、「本は、戦争において武器である。」として、徹底的に戦うことを決意した、フランクリン・ルーズベルト大統領の言葉を引用しています。

このポスターの中の言葉は、以下のような意味です。「本を火で殺すことはでない。 人々は死ぬが、本は決して死ぬことはない。 どんな人間も力も、強制収容所という中に永遠に入れておくようなことはできない。人間の、専制政治に対する人間の永遠の戦いを具体化する本を世界から奪うことはでない。 この戦争において、本は武器である。」

 

世界史をみれば、古代から現在まで、書物(現在ではデジタル本などの形態を含む出版物も含むことになりますが)が、いろいろな国や地域で、問題視されて、焼かれたり、抹殺されてきた例は少なくありません。書物というものは、時として思想的弾圧の対象になってしまうからこそ、そうしたものの自由な出版や読み手の自由な選択が常に保障されていなければいけないと思います。その意味では、出版の自由、思想の自由の保障は、決して過去の問題ではなく、常に現在の問題であるとも思います。

下記のポスターには、”1943 Victory Book Campaign” (1943年、戦勝図書運動)という文字が見えます。このキャンペーンは、もともと全米図書館協会(American Library Association)、米国赤十字(American Red Cross)、そして米国慰問協会(United Service Organizations:USO)の3つの機関によって1941年11月に作られたものでした。このキャンペーンの目的は、戦場に向かう米兵達に読んでもらう本を公共によって寄付し、米陸軍と海軍の図書サービスをサポートするものでした。

上記のキャンペーンによって、2000万以上のハードカバーの本が集められ兵士のもとへ送られたといわれています。1943年に入って、米国陸軍省(War Department)と出版社業界が協力して、1億2千万以上の小さくて、軽くて、兵士のポケットやリュックサックに入るような、より実用的なペーパーバックの本を出版して、各戦線に送るようになりました。これは兵隊文庫(Armed Services Editions)と呼ばれました。ナチス・ドイツによる焚書に抵抗する思想においての重要な武器であり、かつ戦場に送られた兵士たちの娯楽やストレス解消、また教育的目的もあり、1947年まで発行されていました。

また、全米のいくつかの大学の図書館にも収蔵されていますが、特にバージニア大学図書館(University of Virginia Library)の中のコレクションはよく知られています。(Books Enlist:https://explore.lib.virginia.edu/exhibits/show/booksgotowar/walk

 この兵隊文庫(Armed Services Editions)についての研究はすでにいくつかあるようですが、最近読んだこの本―When Books Went to War: The stories that helped US win World War II (図書が戦場に行った時:米国が第2次世界大戦での勝利をもたらした物語)という本は、この兵隊文庫を通じていかに戦場の兵士達を勇気づけるものであったかについて研究したもので非常に興味深い本でした。
